The Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department recently received the Special Olympics Georgia Training for Life Award in recognition of its ongoing involvement with and support of Special Olympics.
The parks and recreation department was nominated for the award by Special Olympics Forsyth County (SOFC) for its support, facilities and staff made available to the organization over the years.
?We cannot say enough about our Parks and Recreation,? said Susan Darlington, local coordinator for SOFC. ?They [parks and rec] have proven time and again that they are committed to supporting Special Olympics Forsyth and strive to include many of our athletes in their everyday activities.?
Darlington presented the award to the department at Thursday's Forsyth County Board of Commissioners meeting.
The parks and recreation department provides Special Olympics Forsyth with facilities for its annual local games, which serve more than 350 athletes, a press release stated. Department staff members lead events and support volunteers at the games, and also support the annual Special Olympics Battle of the Bats Softball Invitational.

Darlington noted that the involvement of the department has contributed to the availability of a multitude of leisure and sports activities for Special Olympics athletes in Forsyth County.
?With their support,? she said, ?we are able to continue to strive to meet many of the social and healthy living needs of our citizens with developmental disabilities.?
The department?s receipt of the award was announced during the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association conference held in Athens in November.
