Cheaper insurance for cars with auto braking

The Association of British Insurers has announced that owners of cars fitted with Autonomous Emergency Braking technology will benefit from reduced premiums.

Auto braking: a quantum leap for road safety

Volvo has been a pioneer in auto-braking technology. The system was fitted as standard to its XC60 SUV as far back as 2008 and is now also standard on the V60 estate

It has been confirmed that British insurance companies will offer reduced Group Ratings ? and thus cheaper policies ? for vehicles fitted withAutonomous Emergency Braking?(AEB).

The system, which is available on several new cars, including some Volkswagens Fords and Volvos, uses sensors in the front of the car to detect and avoid an imminent collision by applying the brakes. If the incident can?t be avoided then the system will reduce its severity.

The move is a result of research carried out by Thatcham, the Berkshire-based insurers? research centre that also provides AEB testing for Euro NCAP, the crash test organisation. It quoted a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the US, which showed that owners of Volvos fitted with AEB technology make 25 per cent fewer insurance claims than owners of equivalent vehicles. In the UK, Tristar Worldwide, a Middlesex-based chauffeur company, reported a 28 per cent drop in rear impact accidents where one of its drivers was at fault after a six-month trail of AEB.

Even those without the system fitted to their car stand to benefit from reduced premiums in the long run, with insurers estimating that AEB could cut the number of whiplash claims in the UK by up to 160,000.

James Dalton of the Association of British Insurers said: ?Thanks to the research conducted for the UK insurers by Thatcham, the insurance Group Rating could now be slashed by up to five groups for cars fitted with AEB. The result will be more people choosing safer cars, which means more lives saved, fewer injuries and of course fewer insurance claims. We are delighted that we now have a process for passing this saving on to motorists to help incentivise the uptake of this impressive new safety technology.?
