Meet the Author of New Memoir about Raising a Child with Food Allergies

Susan Weissman, author of a new memoir about the trials and triumphs of raising a child with food allergies, will read from her book and lead a discussion on Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the Metro-Boston Allergy and Asthma Educational Support Group, which meets at 7:00 p.m. at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. The program is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, New England Chapter (AAFA NE).

?Feeding Eden? is a mother?s story of how childhood food allergies affected the life of her son and her family. Topics covered by the book include: becoming her son?s health care advocate; investigating various treatments; attempts to find safe yet satisfying food for her family, her struggles to convey the severity of her son?s health issue without sounding ?crazy,? and how she has maintained her own sanity. Weissman lives in New York City and writes for The Huffington Post, Psychology Today, Allergic Living, and various websites. Discounted copies of ?Feeding Eden? will be available for sale at the meeting.

?This is a great opportunity to meet a parent who has put into writing what so many of us have experienced or are now going through,? says Cindy Aswad, volunteer leader of the group. ?Susan?s book is honest and funny; it should be a wonderful discussion.?

AAFA New England organizes educational support group programs throughout the region, publishes a newsletter, and runs a telephone resource and referral line for people coping with allergies and asthma. For more information, or a free copy of ?Eating Out with Food Allergies? or checklists for managing food allergies in school and child care, call (781)444-7778 or see www.asthmaandallergies.org.

WCT?s Producing Director, Meghan Kenny, who directs this production, is ?thrilled that the cast gets to work with puppets in this production; whether it be operating a single puppet, collaborating with a cast-member or interacting with numerous puppets onstage.? Puppetry workshops have been part of the process for the participants, who are also learning to embrace Dolittle?s love of all living creatures. ?Thanks to this new design element, cast members have the opportunity to learn to work with puppets onstage and breathe life into a wide array of animal characters,? says Kenny.
