Botswana GDP shrinks 2.2 pct in first quarter of 2013

Four people who were on the ground the night of the Benghazi attacks last year are writing a book about their experience, and they're getting a $3 million advance from Twelve Books to do it. The authors are unnamed, according to New York Post's Keith J. Kelly, who describes them as "members of the elite security team from the annex of the US Embassy." That annex, we now know, was the CIA annex, which makes this book deal really fascinating. ...

UK consumer morale hits two-year high in June - GfK

LONDON (Reuters) - British consumer morale has risen to its highest level in just over two years this month, boosted by increasing optimism about the economy and a greater willingness among households to splash out on big purchases.

Market research company GfK said on Friday that its monthly consumer confidence index rose to -21 in June from -22 in May. That was its highest level since May 2011 and matched expectations in a Reuters poll.

The data adds to signs from industry surveys that Britain's still-weak economy is gaining steam.

The Bank of England forecasts 0.5 percent growth in the current quarter, up from a 0.3 percent expansion in the first three months of the year.

June's rise in the GfK index follows a five-point jump in May, and takes it well above its average level for the past year of -26.

"A one-point rise is not in itself important, but what matters more is that it is another marker in what now appears to be a clear upward trend," said Nick Moon, managing director of social research at GfK.

The figures contrast with official data on Thursday that showed consumers' real disposable income fell at its fastest pace since 1987 in the first three months of the year.

"What makes this apparent good cheer somewhat surprising ... is that the improvement comes at a time when there has been a flurry of recent reports showing that people are not only getting worse off, but they are likely to continue to do so," said GfK's Moon.

June's improvement in the GfK index was largely driven by consumers' greater willingness to spend on expensive items, which Moon attributed to special offers from retailers.

But this alone was not enough to account for the steady rise in morale over the past 12 months, he said.

"The overall trend in confidence over the last year is clearly upwards and not driven purely by special offers. So the paradox is that while we are getting worse and worse off, we are feeling more positive."

The survey was conducted from May 31 to June 16 and was carried out by GfK on behalf of the European Commission.

UK queen set for income boost after record profits

LONDON (AP) ? Buckingham Palace accounts showed Thursday that Queen Elizabeth II had a good year financially ? the monarch will receive a 5 percent income boost following record portfolio profits.

The Crown Estate, including much of London's Regent Street and also Windsor Great Park, made 253 million pounds ($380 million) in the last financial year, a 5.2 percent annual increase.

The queen receives 15 percent of Crown Estate profits through a grant supplied by the British government that funds the monarch's spending as head of state.

The annual grant is currently 36.1 million pounds ($55 million) but will rise to 37.9 million pounds ($57.7 million) in 2014, representing a 5 per cent increase.

Keeper of the Privy Purse Alan Reid said in a statement that a significant part of the grant increase would be used on a backlog of essential property maintenance at working Royal Palaces.

Anti-monarchy activists Republic called on the queen to reject the 5 percent increase.

Spokesman Graham Smith said in a statement: "The Crown Estate is not - and never has been - the personal property of the royals. To claim that it should fund their lavish lifestyle is deceitful and dishonest."

The Crown Estate was created in 1760 when George III agreed the crown lands would be managed on behalf of the government.

The estate includes 15 retails parks across the country, around half of the U.K.'s coastal waters and royal parks such as Hyde Park in London.

Chanel In China Is Most Sought-After Fashion Brand, According To World Luxury Index

The fashion world can be quite fickle, leaving brands to duke it out for top positions in the market. The latest Roman Empire to fall is Louis Vuitton, left in the dust by Chanel.

According to the World Luxury Index, Chanel is now the most sought-after brand in China. Previously, Louis Vuitton had held the top slot, but Digital Luxury Group, the company that conducted the market research, claims that Chanel's edge in the lucrative beauty industry pushed it ahead. (Louis Vuitton currently has no stake in beauty.)

It's no wonder Chanel is all the rage in China. Aside from hawking some pretty covetable bags and perfumes, the fashion house has been a model for many of its competitors with its emphasis on exclusivity, especially when it comes to China. After the company opened stores in Shanghai last year, Chanel's president of fashion, Bruno Pavlovsky, told CNN: "We try to get the best three boutiques in Shanghai instead of having 10 boutiques."

Are you listening, Louis Vuitton? Perhaps you just need to launch a fragrance and play a little hard to get so that you can get back into China's good graces.

Walking billboards don't hurt either...

Jackson Williams: Most Telling Moment of the Wendy Davis Texas Senate Filibuster

Some things you just can't make up.

During Tuesday's successful filibuster of an anti-abortion bill in the Texas Senate, Democrat Rodney Ellis (Houston) briefly helped Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) with a back brace during her heroic 13-hour marathon. In response, a rotund Republican arose with a "point of order." He said a rule had been broken whereby no member may aid or abet the filibuster-er in any way. He was adamant.

Thanks to the Lt. Governor, also a conservative Republican, the challenge was upheld and counted as one of Wendy's three strikes, another filibuster rule. During debate over this silly point of order, veteran legislator Ellis took the opportunity to remind fellow senators of some not-so-distant history.

In 1977, a Republican staged the longest filibuster in senate history, 43 hours. Several times, this senator needed a bathroom break, which isn't allowed because the rules state that you can't leave the floor. Yet at one point, the Lt. Governor, a Democrat in a Senate then controlled by Democrats, arranged to receive a message from the House chamber, a maneuver that allowed the Republican to briefly depart without his filibuster killed. He was permitted to run to the nearest ladies' room and empty the waste bag he wore beneath his clothes.

He was accompanied by two sergeants-at-arms so that he wouldn't break the filibuster rule of sitting. Not kidding.

At another point during the almost two-day affair, according to Ellis, a group of Republicans got a trash can and literally encircled their colleague on the floor of the Senate so he could privately handle his business right there and continue onward.

Aiding and abetting, indeed. Yes, Virginia, democracy can sometimes include....latrine duty?

Neither side of the aisle considered any of this a violation at the time. It was simply being gracious. Ah, but it wasn't a female member fighting to block a draconian abortion bill in an era of right-wing extremism. Gloves off, back brace be damned!

I must be clueless. I don't understand the mindset of modern Republicans. Then again, perhaps I do. Maybe there really is a war on women raging within today's GOP. Ask Wendy Davis the next time you see her, and believe me, you'll see her. She's now a rising star.

The Republicans have seen to it, bless their hearts.
