Ruining a movie date in Japan

goo Ranking asked their panellers what behaviours by their date at the movies would ruin the mood.

Demographics

Between the 2nd and 5th of May 2013 1,088 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 50.2% of the sample were male, 23.3% in their teens, 24.4% in their twenties, 25.5% in their thirties, and 26.8% in their forties; there was no-one older than 49 in this sample. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample.

what will you watch?

Looking at number 9=, it would seem to be relatively acceptable to fall asleep for a little bit? Funnily enough, even though I go to the cinema about once every two months and am often rather tired, I?ve never actually fallen asleep, even at times when I wanted to. I can however manage to fall asleep at live musical theatre where I?ve paid much more money for a seat that is usually less comfortable than the average cinema one.

NBA Free Agents 2013: Young Studs Who Must Be Locked Up Now

NBA teams can?t think short term when evaluating 2013 free agents.

That?s how money is wasted and franchises are set back years trying to recover. There are several young players in this year?s class who, if paid properly, will benefit a franchise in the near and distant future.

Here are those players.

?

3. Tyreke Evans

Evans? points per game have declined every season since his rookie year, but that doesn?t mean he can?t be a key contributor on a contender. He finished the 2012-13 campaign with career highs in two-and three-point field-goal percentage. If Evans escapes the losing culture that he?s known his entire professional career with the Sacramento Kings, the 23-year-old will have the chance to finally blossom to his full potential.

?

2. Brandon Jennings

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel?s Charles F. Gardner reported that the Milwaukee Bucks plan to keep Jennings, a restricted free agent, for at least one more year. It would be in their best interest to sign him to a long-term deal, though. If they don't, Jennings said ?there is no way? he stays if he?s forced to sign a one-year qualifying offer, according to"Yahoo! Sports"?Marc J. Spears.

Jennings has shown flashes of scoring brilliance, but his 17.5 points per game this past season came off of shooting an inefficient 39.9 percent from the field. He did have his best year passing, though, increasing his assists per game from 5.5 to 6.5.

?

1. Andrew Bynum

Is Bynum worth a max contract?

Is Bynum worth a max contract?

  • Yes

  • No

Bynum didn?t play a second of basketball this year, but he still deserves to be one of the most highly sought-after players in free agency.

Before undergoing more knee surgery, he was coming off the best campaign of his career. He averaged 18.7 points, 11.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game for the Los Angeles Lakers. Bynum finished the season with a player efficiency rating of 23.0 (the league average is 15.0), tying him for the 10th-highest mark in the NBA.

Bynum is worth the risk because he?s the second-best center in the league when healthy.

How To Make Green Improvements To Your Home | Green Home ...

In the present day, green home improvements are finding their way to the top of many homeowners? priority lists. While the concept of a green home can be described in various ways depending on who you ask, it all boils down to the basic recipe of environmental friendliness. For instance, granite and wood counter-tops are not the only green updates you can make to your home. You should begin with the factors that affect your utility costs to ensure that you are not using unnecessary energy amounts.

Energy efficiency is fast becoming a recognized standard not only in the construction of new homes, but existing ones as well. Ultimately, all projects geared towards being green around the home should reduce monthly utility bills and be environmentally friendly. Below, therefore, we take a look at 4 ingenious ways of making green improvements to your home that should see you reduce your power bill and achieve environmental friendliness as follows:

Upgrade to a more energy efficient kitchen

Investing in a green kitchen should be at the forefront of any home improvement checklist since the kitchen is at the heart of every home. It is also the room that sets the mood whenever a potential buyer or guest walks in. Additionally, it is where a majority of electrical appliances are located and which are responsible for high utility bills. Therefore, in order to make your home greener, energy rated refrigerators, dishwashers, dryer/washer sets etc. are a must-have.

Maintain constant home temperatures

One of the smartest green home moves is, arguably, upgrading to a programmable thermostat. Not only is it easy to install, but it is also one of the least expensive green home improvements that you will ever make and is today a staple for many homes. Moreover, with advances in technology, remote learning thermostats that can be controlled from your computer or smart phones now exist. This means that you can adjust your home thermostat right from your office before you begin your commute home. Typically, a return on investment on a programmable thermostat may take anywhere between four months and one-and- a-half years.

Improve attic insulation

The attic is synonymous with lots of storage space and it is also where heat seeps out during the summer months and escapes during the winter. And when it comes to greening your home, the best return on investment may be derived from spray foam insulation since attic temperatures can reach as high as 170 degrees during the summer if not properly insulated, or you can rent a sustainability storage space like the one KSS offers in Newcastle. It is thus prudent to take a peek at your attic and see what level and type of insulation you have.
Blown-in insulation or fiberglass are other viable alternatives although they compress over time and lose their efficiency properties. However, spray foam insulation will last an eternity. It will never require replacing nor lose its efficiency. More importantly, you will notice a dramatic reduction of between 30% and 40% in your utility bills. That is definitely going green.

Invest in energy star windows

If you still have single pane windows, then it is about time you considered installing energy star rated windows if you want your home to go green. This is because old windows cause drafts that affect cooling and heating costs not to mention your comfort levels. Therefore, for energy savings and maximum comfort, energy star windows are the way to go. Choose those that are filled with argon gas and are double-paned and you are likely to save up to 25% on your electric bill thus putting some green not only in your pocket, but in your home as well.

Claim: 'Recent El Ni?o behavior is largely beyond natural variability ...

From the University of Hawaii at Manoa:

El Nino unusually active in the late 20th century

This graph shows El Ni?o variability derived from tree rings (blue) and instrumental measurements (red). The dashed lines indicate boundary for natural variability. Recent El Ni?o behavior is largely beyond natural variability. Credit: International Pacific Research Center

Spawning droughts, floods, and other weather disturbances world-wide, the El Ni?o ? Southern Oscillation (ENSO) impacts the daily life of millions of people. During El Ni?o, Atlantic hurricane activity wanes and rainfall in Hawaii decreases while Pacific winter storms shift southward, elevating the risk of floods in California.

The ability to forecast how ENSO will respond to global warming thus matters greatly to society. Providing accurate predictions, though, is challenging because ENSO varies naturally over decades and centuries. Instrumental records are too short to determine whether any changes seen recently are simply natural or attributable to man-made greenhouse gases. Reconstructions of ENSO behavior are usually missing adequate records for the tropics where ENSO develops.

Help is now underway in the form of a tree-ring record reflecting ENSO activity over the past seven centuries. Tree-rings have been shown to be very good proxies for temperature and rainfall measurements. An international team of scientists spearheaded by Jinbao Li and Shang-Ping Xie, while working at the International Pacific Research Center, University of Hawaii at Manoa, has compiled 2,222 tree-ring chronologies of the past seven centuries from both the tropics and mid-latitudes in both hemispheres. Their work is published in the June 30, 2013 online issue of Nature Climate Change.

The inclusion of tropical tree-ring records enabled the team to generate an archive of ENSO activity of unprecedented accuracy, as attested by the close correspondence with records from equatorial Pacific corals and with an independent Northern Hemisphere temperature reconstruction that captures well-known teleconnection climate patterns.

These proxy records all indicate that ENSO was unusually active in the late 20th century compared to the past seven centuries, implying that this climate phenomenon is responding to ongoing global warming.

?In the year after a large tropical volcanic eruption, our record shows that the east-central tropical Pacific is unusually cool, followed by unusual warming one year later. Like greenhouse gases, volcanic aerosols perturb the Earth?s radiation balance. This supports the idea that the unusually high ENSO activity in the late 20th century is a footprint of global warming? explains lead author Jinbao Li.

?Many climate models do not reflect the strong ENSO response to global warming that we found,? says co-author Shang-Ping Xie, meteorology professor at the International Pacific Research Center, University of Hawaii at Manoa and Roger Revelle Professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California at San Diego. ?This suggests that many models underestimate the sensitivity to radiative perturbations in greenhouse gases. Our results now provide a guide to improve the accuracy of climate models and their projections of future ENSO activity. If this trend of increasing ENSO activity continues, we expect to see more weather extremes such as floods and droughts.?

U.S. President Barack Obama speaks at the University of Cape Town Sunday, June 30, 2013, in Cape Town, South Africa. The visit comes as beloved former South African president and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela lies very ill in a Johannesburg hospital. In deeply personal remarks Obama called on young Africans to shore up progress on the continent that rests on a "fragile foundation," and summoned them to fulfill Mandela's legacy. "Nelson Mandela showed us that one man's courage can move the world," he said. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)

(AP) ? Retired archbishop Desmond Tutu locked eyes with President Barack Obama on Sunday in an emotional moment between two men who have been pioneers for racial progress a world apart.

Tutu greeted Obama with a "welcome home" to the continent where his father was born, and pleaded with the U.S. president to be a leader for peace, especially in the Middle East, who can make all Africans proud.

Obama was visiting the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation Youth Centre, an after-school program in a community where many young people are infected with the virus that causes AIDS. Obama praised Tutu, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who helped bring an end to South Africa's racist apartheid rule, as "an unrelenting champion of justice and human dignity."

Tutu then spoke of Obama's re-election last fall as America's first African-American president. "You don't know what you did for our psyche," Tutu said. "You won, and we won."

"Your success is our success. Your failure, whether you like it or not, is our failure," Tutu said, reaching out to touch Obama's arm. Obama chuckled and threw up his arms as if acknowledging his fate.

"We want you to be known as having brought peace to the world, especially to have brought an end to the anguish of all in the Middle East," Tutu said. "We pray that you will be known as having brought peace in all of these places where there is strife. You have brought peace and no need for the Guantanamo Bay detention center" in Cuba, where the U.S. has detained dozens of suspected terrorists.

In a diplomatic tour full of scripted formality, the 81-year-old archbishop spoke so slowly and passionately that many in the room who work at the center or the White House were moved to tears. "We are proud of you. You belong to us," Tutu concluded.

Obama also may have appreciated such affirming words at a time when he seems to be under constant criticism at home. Obama rose and helped Tutu to his feet, and the two heartily embraced, with the click of media cameras the only sound in the room.

___

Obama gave lessons in stage performance to an aspiring teenage rapper after meeting 15-year-old Aviwe Mtongana, who was making music on a Tutu center computer.

The boy identified himself as a rapper and Obama urged the boy, also known as Katmeister, to "give me a little sample."

Mtongana initially demurred, then pushed back his chair and stood up. A grinning Obama said Mtongana must need to "loosen up," and the president demonstrated stretching out his arms like a boxer preparing for a fight.

Mtongana let loose a brief rhyme. "Hell on Earth, what you gonna do? Watching TV, you watching Scooby-Doo. Saying the punch line, he's not cool," he began.

"Heading to the goal with something failing, now you face the hardest living," Mtongana continued. "Getting out there is not pimping, the real way is through rapping."

Obama declared the performance "outstanding," but offered a word of advice.

"You've got to drop the mic," he said, holding his arm out to the side and opening his fist as though he were dropping a microphone on the ground.

___

Obama prematurely aged his daughter Malia by a few days.

He said in a speech at the University of Cape Town that she is "now 15." But the fact of the matter is Malia doesn't turn 15 until Thursday. She was born on the Fourth of July.

Malia might have appreciated the premature aging, since most teens cannot wait to grow up.

___

Before the speech, Obama and his family toured the Robben Island prison where Nelson Mandela spent nearly 20 years as a political prisoner before he was released and elected South Africa's first black president.

Obama spent more than 20 minutes inside the tiny cell that housed Mandela for 18 years.

After his family left, Obama remained alone inside the cell that now is a monument to Mandela, a man Obama says is a "personal hero." The president gazed out of a large window with thick white bars. He picked up and examined a small, metal bowl that sat on a small, wooden table before turning his attention to a thin mat with pillows and a brown blanket, on which Mandela would have slept.

Obama visited Robben Island in 2006, when he was a U.S. senator, but the tour was a first for his wife, Michelle, and daughters, Malia and Sasha.

"There was something different about bringing my children," Obama said, opening his speech at the university. He said they now appreciate more the sacrifices that Mandela and others had made for freedom. "I knew this was an experience they would never forget," Obama said.

___

Before leaving the island, Obama signed the prison's guest book with a message likely to be seen by the countless visitors who will follow him.

The large book sat open on a simple wooden desk, in a courtyard rimmed by a high concrete wall topped with barbed wire. U.S. Secret Service agents made use of an old guard tower, staffing it with sharpshooters who scanned the horizon with binoculars. The prison was closed to the public for Obama's visit.

Obama, casually dressed in a blue shirt with rolled-up sleeves and khaki slacks, leaned over the desk and wrote for several minutes with first lady Michelle Obama at his side. She signed her name, too.

"On behalf of our family, we're deeply humbled to stand where men of such courage faced down injustice and refused to yield," the president wrote. "The world is grateful for the heroes of Robben Island, who remind us that no shackles or cells can match the strength of the human spirit."

Obama copied his message from a piece of typewritten paper an aide had set down on the book before the president came into the courtyard. He wrote slowly in cursive, apparently not wanting to make a mistake. He left behind the black marker he used to write the message, as well as the note he worked from.
