Moreover, the participants are able to jointly create an online shared document through E-mail, Messenger, SNS and Video conference. The infrastructure provides an environment for interactive, real-time communication amongst the involved staff cooperating with each other. In doing so, POSCO?s employees, with the expert knowledge are capable of cooperating freely with one another. Their time is also managed more effectively as the system saves a great deal of time consumption, usually taken for meeting, travelling, instruction and briefing.

Online Cooperation utilized by PC video conference

Online Cooperation utilized by PC video conference

The video conference via PC is noteworthy as there are more than 3,000 on-line meetings held every month. Such active usage of the online communication and cooperation has resulted in a 14 percent decrease in long-distance business trips and reduced about 30 percent of wasted costs for travelling.

The online scheduling is also being actively used. A productive environment has been settled where the supervisors and staff can easily communicate and focus on their tasks by exchanging directions and cooperate online. POSCO says the numbers of document prints are now cut down by 77 percent and the briefings involving printed documents have also been decreased from 71 percent to 20 percent.

The system?s automatic and real-time translator also contributes for sharing information in different languages amidst POSCO?s staff. Any contents in text-format can be translated with the translator?s ability of processing 66 languages. As you might have guessed by now, it also saves time as there?s no need to spend time and costs for translation.

?

From ?Smart? to ?Speed? Workplace!

The ?Smart Workplace? provides an environment for mobile work and telecommuting, enabling the staff to undertake giving directions, receiving reports and every other task which they are responsible for, from the outside the office.

Use Bookmarklets to Easily Sent Web Pages to Pocket, Evernote, Readability, and More in Mobile Chrome

Use Bookmarklets to Easily Sent Web Pages to Pocket, Evernote, Readability, and More in Mobile ChromeGoogle Chrome is one of our favorite browsers on Android and iOS, but it doesn't support extensions or let you easily add bookmarklets. This means you can't do handy things like send articles to a read it later service directly from the mobile browser. However, it's not impossible, and tech blog Digital Inspiration shows how to use bookmarklets to accomplish it.

First things first, you need to get the bookmarklets you want installed in Chrome on your desktop (to get you started, here are a few we like: Evernote, Readability, Instapaper, Pocket, Kindle). Now, make sure your mobile version of Chrome syncs with your desktop version (Settings > Email > Service > Sync).

Now, in mobile Chrome, start typing the name of the bookmarklet in the omnibar and it should appear. Select it, and it'll send that web page to the service you choose. For example, type "Send to Evernote" in the omnibar, and your bookmarklet (the one that starts with javascript) appears. Select that, and the web page you're on is sent over. If you're a frequent user of mobile Chrome and a read it later service, it's incredibly helpful to set up a few bookmarklets. Head over to Digital Inspiration for a few more creative uses of bookmarklets on mobile.

Violence erupts at Malaysian standoff, armed group says 10 dead

MANILA (Reuters) - A standoff in the eastern Malaysian state of Sabah erupted in violence on Friday, with a spokesman for a group of armed Filipinos occupying a village there saying 10 members of the group had been killed when police raided their camp.

But the Malaysian home minister denied that police had fired a shot and the Philippine government said it had received no reports of casualties among the group, who are followers of the Sultanate of Sulu, in the southern Philippines.

The standoff with police has threatened to spark tension between the Philippines and Malaysia, whose ties have been periodically frayed by security and migration problems along their sea border. Both governments have urged the group to return home.

Abraham Idjirani, a spokesman for the group, told reporters in Manila that 10 members of the group had been killed and four wounded when Malaysian police raided the village where they have been holed up for more than two weeks.

Malaysia's The Star newspaper reported that at least two gunmen had been killed and three police officers wounded.

The leader of the group earlier told Philippine radio they had been surrounded by Malaysian police, who have warned in recent days that a deadline for them to leave had passed.

"They are here, they entered our area so we have to defend ourselves. There's shooting already," Raja Muda Agbimuddin Kiram, brother of the former Sultan of Sulu, told the radio station by telephone.

"We're surrounded," Kiram said. "We will defend ourselves."

Malaysian police could not be reached for comment.

Manuel Roxas, a Philippine government official who has been designated a spokesman on the stand-off, said in a radio interview that the Philippine government was verifying reports of the fighting.

Ricky Carandang, the Philippines' presidential spokesman, said some of the group had tried to breach a cordon setup by the Malaysian security forces on Friday morning.

"There was a warning shot but there's no report of casualty, that was what we got and confirmed by the DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs)," he told Reuters

The armed group is demanding recognition from Malaysia and renegotiation of the original terms of a lease on Sabah by the Sultanate to a British trading company in the 19th century. Malaysian officials have said the group's demands would not be met.

The Temptations in 1972. From left, Richard Street, Melvin Franklin, Otis Williams, Dennis Edwards and Damon Harris. Street and Harris both died in February.

Cindy Street said her husband died on Wednesday at St. Rose Dominican Hospital in Las Vegas. She had taken him to the emergency room on Friday after he had trouble breathing.

"He was fighting to the very last moment," she said in a telephone interview from Las Vegas. "He was very happy. He had the kind of life he wanted. We laughed all the time."

Street, who had suffered from a blood clot more than a decade ago, was the second ex-member of the versatile Motown band to die this month after Otis "Damon" Harris died at age 62.

The Temptations was one of the leading male vocal groups of the 1960s and early 1970s, surviving several personnel changes to tackle a wide range of musical styles with tight harmonies and well choreographed dance routines.

Street was not in the original 1960s lineup but joined the band in the early 1970s and continued for more than 20 years before pursuing a solo career.

During his tenure, the Temptations released a string of hits including the 1972 chart-topping classic "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" and "Masterpiece" released the following year.

"He was very proud of being part of black history," his wife said, adding he loved performing. "He was very proud of what he had done."

Street had completed a 45-show tour in Europe in September and October.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete, but will probably take place next week. Because her husband was a public figure, his widow said she thought she would open the services to the public. Street is also survived by four children.

In probing mysteries of glass, researchers find a key to toughness

Wednesday, February 27, 2013

In a paper published online Feb. 26 in the journal Nature Communications, a Yale University team and collaborators propose a way of predicting whether a given glass will be brittle or ductile ? a desirable property typically associated with metals like steel or aluminum ? and assert that any glass could have either quality.

Ductility refers to a material's plasticity, or its ability to change shape without breaking.

"Most of us think of glasses as brittle, but our finding shows that any glass can be made ductile or brittle," said Jan Schroers, a professor of mechanical engineering and materials science at Yale, who led the research with Golden Kumar, a professor at Texas Tech University. "We identified a special temperature that tells you whether you form a ductile or brittle glass."

The key to forming a ductile glass, they said, is cooling it fast. Exactly how fast depends on the nature of the specific glass.

Focusing on a new group of glasses known as bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) ? metal alloys, or blends, that can be extremely pliable yet also as strong as steel ? researchers studied the effect of a so-called critical fictive temperature (CFT) on the glasses' mechanical properties at room temperature.

When forming from liquid, there is a temperature at which glass becomes too viscous for reconfiguration and freezes. This temperature is called the glass transition temperature. Based on experiments with three representative bulk metallic glasses, the researchers said there is also, for each distinct alloy, a critical temperature that determines the brittleness or plasticity of the glass. This is the CFT.

Researchers said it's possible to categorize glasses in two groups ? those that will be brittle because in liquid form their CFT is above the glass transition temperature, and those that will be ductile, because in liquid form their CFT is below the glass transition temperature.

They previously thought a liquid's chemical composition alone would determine whether a glass would be brittle or ductile.

"That's not the case," Schroers said. "We can make any glass theoretically ductile or brittle. And it is the critical fictive temperature which determines how experimentally difficult it is to make a ductile glass. That is the major contribution of this work."

The finding applies theoretically to all glasses, not metallic glasses only, he said.

"A glass can have completely different properties depending on the rate at which you cool it," Schroers said. "If you cool it fast, it is very ductile, and if you cool it slow it?s very brittle. We anticipate that our finding will contribute to the design of ductile glasses, and in general contribute to a deeper understanding of glass formation."
