Geneva Stunner: Ferrari LaFerrari Enjoys the Last Laugh, Despite Silly Name

Ferrari LaFerrari

?

First we called it the Enzo, then it was dubbed the F150. But when Ferrari's range-topping turned out to be named the LaFerrari, automotive enthusiasts let out a collective shoulder shrug and eye roll... that is, until they laid eyes on the smolderingly striking thing.

?

When the red silk cover was whisked off this 1 million Euro ($1.3 million) ?bercar at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, the throngs of assembled motoring journalists and VIPs seemed genuinely thrilled to see these alien shapes carved in red. It's not just the car's curious planar surfaces, massive air intakes, or antennae-like side mirror pods that stirred the crowd; it's also that the new flagship's performance arsenal actually matches its cornea bulging looks.

?

The LaFerrari's chassis uses four types of carbon fiber which are hand-laminated and autoclave-cured within Ferrari's race department, while a naturally aspirated 6,262cc V12 works with an electric motor to deliver 963 metric horsepower. The so-called HY-KERS hybrid system was adopted directly from Formula 1, and the car's copious active aerodynamics lend?it considerable flexibility in the drag/downforce tug-o-war.

?

"This car represents the future of our range," Chairman Luca di Montezemolo told the crowd, mentioning that though production was limited to 499, there are 700 Ferrari fans ready to part ways with seven figures worth of dough for the opportunity to own the curiously named hypercar. While Lamborghini's Veneno and McLaren's P1 ambitiously endowed supercars also made waves at the show, it was Luca's flagship that caught the most buzz. As silly as it sounds, we're going to say it: Advantage LaFerrari.
