If you're planning on spending time in Somerset, holiday cottages make for a fantastic way to enjoy, at your own pace, the natural splendour and vibrant history of one of the countrys most breathtaking regions. With the range of adventures available, whether it be exploring some of the countys most famous monuments, walking through its stunning scenery, or visiting its fun, family-friendly attractions, there are more options for wonderful day trips than would be possible to fit into any trip all with the promise of a cosy cottage to return to. To help make the decision a little easier, here are three of Somersets top days out.
Glastonbury
With the wealth of beautiful and inspiring attractions to choose between when planning day trips around Somerset, holiday cottages in the county make it difficult to pick just one but a strong contender for the best day out in the region would have to be Glastonbury. This ancient town in the Mendip district has witnessed almost the entire history of human settlement in Britain, from the Neolithic age through to the modern day. An important town in Saxon times, its 2000-year old Abbey allows visitors to step back in time to learn more about this formative period in the countrys past, with living history tours and a museum full of fascinating objects. A picnic in the spectacular Abbey grounds is the finishing touch on a great family day out.
Dunster
There are few better ways to get a sense of medieval Britain than by exploring Somerset. Holiday cottages are the perfect base to explore some of the regions most striking historic sites, and top of the list is Dunster, a medieval village located in Exmoor, with some of the best preserved old buildings in the country. Its star attraction is Dunster Castle, the historic home of the famous Luttrell family, it commands stunning views across the surrounding countryside and the Bristol Channel, and is a real treat for lovers of architecture and beautiful gardens. As well as the castle, the village has plenty to offer in its own right, with its priory, water mill, yarn market, doll museum and plenty of cosy tea shops to relax in after exploring. Walkers are also provided for with the Exmoor National Park footpaths.
Longleat Safari
When planning days out in Somerset, holiday cottages aren't just located around fascinating historical monuments. Those looking for something different that all ages can enjoy might want to consider Longleat Safari and Adventure Park. With a whole range of beautiful - and well cared for - wild animals roaming freely through its expansive enclosures, which can be explored by jeep and boat, it is a world of discovery for animal lovers, and especially great for little ones with plenty of interesting talks and activities.
