Arguably the heaviest of heavy books, Robert Heinlein's philosophical (dare we say theological) tome from 1961 remains a counterculture masterpiece. A child of astronauts is marooned on Mars and raised by Martians. Upon his return to Earth his wide-eyed view of the world, plus his telekinetic powers, make him a celebrity. His creation of a new religion in The Church of All Worlds grants him many followers but also powerful enemies.
This would be a tough one to adapt; the joys of the novel are sociological ones that might not play easily on the big screen. But the source material is one known to spark endless discussion. In the 1990s Tom Hanks was discussed as appearing in a movie version, and the last person to hold the rights, as of 2006, was mega-producer Scott Rudin (not a bad person to be involved in such a thing.)
Of course, Heinlein's other great work Starship Troopers was adapted by Paul Verhoeven and turned into a brilliant satire. Although some feel it wasn't quite in the spirit of the novel, it was enough of a box-office success to inspire two not-altogether-awful direct-to-video sequels. Who knows? Perhaps Hollywood has the appetite for more Heinlein.
