Do Blondes Really Cheat More?
Is there a link between hair color and infidelity?

A study by Cheaterville.com suggests that blonde women are more likely to cheat than brunettes.

Recently, dating and social media site Cheaterville?released a survey of its users on the topic of hair color and cheating. The website is a place where you can publicly call out cheating partners ? their slogan is "Don't be the last to know" ? and see names of others who have cheated. According to their results, hair color seems to play a role in how likely you are to cheat.

More from YourTango: What's Wrong With Sexy Halloween Costumes?

Cheaterville's survey found that blonde women are more likely to cheat than brunettes, whereas?male cheaters are more likely to have brown hair. In fact, 43 percent of female cheaters were blonde (and blondes are, what, 5 percent of the population?), 23 percent were brunette and 11 percent had black hair. As for the men, 40 percent of the unfaithful had brown hair, 23 percent had black hair, 20 percent were blonde and 5 percent were redheads.?

However, and this is a big however, this study is quite easily criticized?for not?taking into account factors such as baldness, hair dye, wigs ... anything that could skew the data. Women are more likely to dye their hair than men, so that could take into account why the male statistics more accurately reflect national averages regarding actual hair color. We all know ladies like to go blonde. Additionally, much of the data can be considered anecdotal and thereby less reliable.

The study might be informal, but it begs the question: Why has it been going around to so many media outlets? Why do people find it to be believable?

It's no secret that for a long time, the concept of a "blonde bombshell" has pervaded American culture (and others). In part because of sex symbols like Marilyn Monroe, Mae West and Jean Harlow, as well as more modern ones like Pamela Anderson and Heather Locklear, many people have associated blondes with being the most "sexual" hair color. Plus, blonde hair connotes youth, since fewer and fewer people are naturally blonde as they get older. And people connect youth and beauty with ... you guessed it, sex and promiscuity.

But I also understand why people fall for these studies: We all want to avoid heartbreak. It hurts horribly when you realize somebody has betrayed you, and it's almost never easy to just "get over it" or to listen when other people tell you you're "worth more than that." It's just not that simple. It really truly aches when you find out that somebody you love is hurting you, so we look for ways to avoid it.?

Sound off: Is this a believable statistic deserving of a scientific study's confirmation? Do blondes really cheat more in your experience?

Exiled to Nowhere

Photographer Greg Constantine's images show the human face of the Rohingya, an ethnic minority who find themselves stranded, with no state to recognize them or protect their rights.

Exiled to Nowhere By Greg Constantine

In Exiled to Nowhere, photographer Greg Constantine tells in pictures the little-known story of the Rohingya, a stateless ethnic minority in Burma who have long been denied the most basic human rights.

For nearly half a century, Burma has resisted recognizing the Rohingya as one of the country?s indigenous groups. And so far, Burma?s recent opening up and reforms have done little to change the situation. As the writer Emma Larkin explains in a foreword to "Exiled to Nowhere," the Rohingya trace their origins back to Arab traders who arrived in northwestern Burma as early as the ninth century. But Burmese scholars and historians dispute the existence of even the word Rohingya prior to 1950. They call them ?Bengalis,? which in effect designates them as foreigners. They claim that while the British encouraged their migration into Burma during colonial times to work in agriculture, many of today?s Rohingyas are recent immigrants from Bangladesh.

Few of the country?s estimated 800,000 Rohingyas have been allowed to gain Burmese citizenship. They cannot travel beyond their own villages without permission. Their marriages require government approval, and they cannot enroll their children in regular schools. Rohingya men have provided forced labor to the army and local security forces. Rohingya women have been subjected to sexual harassment. The Rohingya have for decades been largely ignored by the international community except for the work of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

All of that changed in early June this year when communal clashes involving the Rohingya and the Rakhine ethnic group erupted in western Burma in early June of this year. Both the Muslim Rohingya and the local Rakhine Buddhists suffered serious casualties, about 80 killed in total, by official count. Human rights groups say that the figure is likely to have been much higher. In late October, the violence erupted again, with at least 64 killed by official count and thousands of homes destroyed by fire.

Tensions and fears on both sides are still high, and another round of unrest could erupt at any time. Constantine?s book focuses on the nearly 300,000 Rohingyas who have fled to neighboring Bangladesh, many of them leaving Burma after the junta led by General Ne Win launched a purge of ?illegal foreigners? in 1978. In Rakhine, this resulted in widespread brutality, including mass arrests targeting the Rohingya population. Some 250,000 Rohingya refugees then flooded into Bangladesh. These refugees are now targeted by the Bangladesh government as unwanted and they have suffered from periodic attempts to shut down the crowded refugee camps in which they have sought shelter. Following the June violence, hundreds of Rohingyas attempted to flee to Bangladesh in boats across the narrow Naf River and by sea. Bangladesh border guards forced them back. A few escaped into hiding in Bangladesh.

Constantine introduces us first to a 34-year-old Rohingya man named Jafar, who has spent more than half his life in a refugee camp in Bangladesh ?with no country to belong to.? Jafar was born in 1978, the year that General Ne Win launched his ethnic cleansing operation.

?Myanmar is my home and that is where I want to go back to,? Jafar says. ?But none of us has citizenship, and without citizenship we are like a fish out of water?.?

A female refugee, Fatima, describes the treatment of the Rohingya by NaSaKa, a security force established in 1992 that includes elements of police, immigration, customs, and military intelligence units. In 1994, the Burmese authorities issued an order that required Rohingyas wishing to marry to first receive permission from NaSaKa. The order was issued nowhere else in Burma. Those who disobey the order can still be arrested, prosecuted, and imprisoned for up to 10 years. Couples must usually pay extortion money and often have to wait years for permission to be granted. They must also sign a statement saying they will have no more than two children.

Best Practices for Mobile Retail Site Development - Small Business ...

With the growing popularity of mobile devices equipped with instant internet access, retailers need to adapt to keep up. Making your retail site mobile-accessible allows you to reach millions of potential customers whose primary means of accessing the internet is through their mobile devices. If your site?isn?t?mobile-ready, you could be missing out on potential customers and sales.

There are a number of methods for creating a mobile website. Which option is right for you depends upon your retail specific needs, how much you?re willing to spend, and how well you avoid potential pitfalls.

Mobile Website Options

Knowing your needs, especially for browsing and purchasing, can help you determine which development option is best for you.

  • What are the specific needs of your retail site? Some sites can be converted to be mobile-friendly, depending on their size and how they are built.
  • How much are you willing to spend? Some sites, even though they function well on a desktop computer, don?t lend themselves to being converted to mobile. In that case, you may want to outsource the work to a reputable web design company with experience in building and optimizing product heavy mobile sites.

Ease of Use

You want your mobile site to be easy to use, both for you and for your customers. Whether your mobile site simply offers the bare essentials about your company or provides a plethora of products available for immediate purchase, it has to be easy to navigate.

  • Customers prefer to browse products that are displayed catalog style. If your mobile site looks cluttered or disorganized, this will reduce its effectiveness as a marketing strategy.
  • Near field communications (NFC) technology makes it easier than ever for customers to make purchases from mobile retailers. Consider adding this feature to your mobile site.

Potential Pitfalls

Having a mobile site is a great way to reach new customers and advertise your product, but if not executed properly it can also be detrimental to your business. High-speed wireless internet access has accustomed users to fast page load times. If your mobile site takes more than 3 seconds to load, potential customers will ?surf? somewhere else.

  • Test your mobile site on a variety of devices to ensure that it is compatible with various platforms and both older and newer phones. Nothing drives a customer away faster than glitches, broken links, and failed code.
  • Beware of object and java script, which drains both bandwidth and batteries and can interfere with customers? ability to receive calls while browsing.

Don?t forget to set up analytics software for your mobile site. Analytics software helps you optimize your site for turning high traffic into effective purchases.

Whether you develop your mobile site with a plugin, downloadable tool, conversion software, or outside web design company, it can directly increase your business? online presence and sales. Consider your site?s needs and your company?s budget before deciding on an option. No matter what option you choose, be sure that your site is easy for customers to use and navigate.

Monster storm leaves U.S. East Coast crippled; 30 dead

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Millions of people were left reeling in the aftermath of monster storm Sandy on Tuesday as New York City and a wide swathe of the eastern United States struggled with epic flooding and massive power outages. The death toll climbed to at least 30.

Sandy, which crashed ashore with hurricane-force winds in New Jersey overnight as the biggest storm to hit the country in generations, swamped parts of New York's subway system and Manhattan's Wall Street district, closing financial markets for a second day.

As the weakened but still sprawling storm system continued its trek inland, more than 1 million people in a dozen states along its path were still under orders to evacuate. Sandy left behind a trail of damage - homes underwater, trees toppled and power lines downed - up and down the Atlantic coast.

The storm interrupted the presidential campaign a week before Election Day, giving President Barack Obama an opportunity to look presidential as he oversees the government response. He drew praise from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who has been a strong supporter of Obama's opponent.

"I want everyone leaning forward on this," an aide quoted Obama as telling his disaster-response team in the White House Situation Room. "I don't want to hear that we didn't do something because bureaucracy got in the way."

Houses and businesses on the New Jersey shore sustained extensive damage from the storm's onslaught. "The devastation is unthinkable," Christie told reporters after seeing aerial pictures of the area.

In the storm's wake, Obama issued federal emergency decrees for New York and New Jersey, declaring that "major disasters" existed in both states. One disaster-forecasting company predicted economic losses could ultimately reach $20 billion, only half insured.

"Make no mistake about it. This was a devastating storm, maybe the worst we have ever experienced," New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

All along the East Coast, residents and business owners awoke to scenes of destruction.

"There are boats in the street five blocks from the ocean," said evacuee Peter Sandomeno, one of the owners of the Broadway Court Motel in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey. "That's the worst storm I've ever seen, and I've been there for 11 years."

Sandy, which was especially imposing because of its wide-ranging winds, brought a record storm surge of almost 14 feet to downtown Manhattan, well above the previous record of 10 feet during Hurricane Donna in 1960, the National Weather Service said.

Water poured into the subway tunnels that course under the city, the country's financial capital, and Bloomberg said the subway system would likely be closed for four or five days.

"Hitting at high tide, the strongest surge and the strongest winds all hit at the worst possible time," said Jeffrey Tongue, a meteorologist for the weather service in Brookhaven, New York.

Hurricane-force winds as high as 90 miles per hour (145 km per hour) were recorded, he said. "Hopefully it's a once-in-a-lifetime storm," Tongue said.

As residents and business owners began a massive clean-up effort and faced a long and costly recovery, large parts of the region remained without power, and transportation in the New York metropolitan area was at a standstill.

The U.S. Department of Energy said more than 8 million homes and businesses in several states were without electricity due to the storm, which crashed ashore late on Monday near the gambling resort of Atlantic City, New Jersey.

MORE THAN 50 HOMES BURN

The unprecedented flooding hampered efforts to fight a massive fire that destroyed more than 50 homes in Breezy Point, a private beach community on the Rockaway barrier island in the New York City borough of Queens.

New York University's Tisch hospital was forced to evacuate more than 200 patients, among them babies on respirators in the neonatal intensive care unit, when the backup generator failed. Four of the newborns had to be carried down nine flights of stairs while nurses manually squeezed bags to deliver air to the babies' lungs, CNN reported.

The death toll continued to rise, with reports of at least 30 people killed by the storm.

"Sadly the storm claimed lives throughout the region, including at least 10 in our city ... and we expect that number to go up," Bloomberg said.

Other storm-related deaths were reported elsewhere in New York state in addition to Massachusetts, Maryland, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. Toronto police also recorded one death - a woman hit by flying debris.

Sandy killed 66 people in the Caribbean last week before pounding U.S. coastal areas.

Federal government offices in Washington, which was spared the full force of the storm, were closed for a second day on Tuesday, and schools were shut up and down the East Coast.

The storm weakened as it plowed slowly west across southern Pennsylvania, its remnants situated between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, with maximum winds down to 45 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.

As Sandy converged with a cold weather system, blizzard warnings were in effect for West Virginia, western Maryland, eastern Tennessee, eastern Kentucky and western North Carolina.

Wind gusts, rain and flooding were likely to extend well into Tuesday, but without the storm's earlier devastating power, said AccuWeather meteorologist Jim Dickey.

At its peak, the storm's wind field stretched from North Carolina north to the Canadian border and from West Virginia to a point in the Atlantic Ocean halfway to Bermuda, easily one of the largest ever seen, the hurricane center said.

Obama and Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney put campaigning on hold for a second day instead of launching their final push for votes ahead of the November 6 election.

Obama, who has made every effort to show himself staying on top of the storm situation, faces political danger if the federal government fails to respond well in the storm's aftermath, as was the case with predecessor George W. Bush's botched handling of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

But Obama also has a chance to look presidential in a national crisis.

With politics cast aside for the moment, Republican Christie heaped praise on the Democratic incumbent for the government's initial storm response.

"The federal government response has been great," Christie, a staunch Romney supporter, told NBC's "Today" show. "I was on the phone at midnight again last night with the president personally ... and the president has been outstanding in this."

NEW JERSEY TOWNS FLOODED

Three towns in New Jersey, just west of New York City, were inundated with up to 5 feet of water after the nearby Hackensack River flooded, officials said. Rescuers were using boats to aid the marooned residents of Moonachie, Little Ferry and Carlstadt.

In New York, a crane partially collapsed and dangled precariously from a 90-story luxury apartment building under construction in Midtown Manhattan.

Much of the city was deserted, as its subways, buses, commuter trains, bridges and airports were closed. Power outages darkened most of downtown Manhattan as well as Westchester County, affecting more than 650,000 customers, power company Consolidated Edison said.

Neighborhoods along the East and Hudson rivers in Manhattan were underwater, as were low-lying streets in Battery Park near Ground Zero, where the World Trade Center once stood.

U.S. stock markets were closed on Tuesday but would likely reopen on Wednesday. They closed on Monday for the first time since the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Most areas in downtown Manhattan were without power on Monday morning. As the sun rose, most of the water in Manhattan's low-lying Battery Park City appeared to have receded.

A security guard at 7 World Trade Center, Gregory Baldwin, was catching some rest in his car after laboring overnight against floodwater that engulfed a nearby office building.

"The water went inside up to here," he said, pointing to his chest. "The water came shooting down from Battery Park with the gusting wind."

In Lower Manhattan, firefighters used inflatable orange boats to rescue utility workers stranded for three hours by rising floodwaters inside a power substation.

One of the Con Ed workers pulled from the floodwater, Angelo Amato, said he was part of a crew who had offered to work through the storm.

"This is what happens when you volunteer," he said.

Introduction Week -- Day Two of FamilySearch Family Tree

No changes this morning, that I can see.

There has apparently been some confusion concerning exactly what I am talking about. FamilySearch.org is a website containing millions of digitized records, the Catalog of the Family History Library, digitized Books, links to the Ancestral File and the Pedigree Resource File, the FamilySearch Research Wiki, the Learning Center with hundreds of instructional videos and many, many more resources for genealogists.

Added to this list of resources is a program that was introduced at RootsTech 2012, called FamilySearch Family Tree. If you go the FamilySearch.org website, and do not sign in, this is what you will see today: (you can click on the image to see it more clearly)

  • Number 1: This is where you go to sign into the program.
  • Number 2: This is a link to search the Ancestral File and the Pedigree Resource File, this is NOT Family Tree.?
  • Number 3: This is the link to the Family History Library Catalog
  • Number 4: This is a link to the digitized books collection
  • Number 5: This is a link to the digitized records from microfilm and from current acquisition through digitized cameras
  • Number 6: This is the link to the Research Wiki and other resources such as the Learning Center with over 400 classes

All of these resources, plus everything else on this site, is free.

NOTE: The link to FamilySearch Family Tree does not appear.

Right now, although this may change in the future, the link to FamilySearch Family Tree does not show unless you are #1: registered and sign into FamilySearch.org, and #2: have an invitation to view the Family Tree program.

You can register for free and sign in simply by clicking on Number 1 above, the Sign In link.

You can get an invitation to enter the Family Tree program by clicking on the Help link in the upper right hand corner and looking at the entries on that page. Here is a screen shot of the Help Center page:

The big red arrow points to the link to the document explaining how to get access to the program.

Once you follow the directions and click the link (assuming you have signed into FamilySearch.org) you will have access to the program from then on. You only have to go through this process one time.
From then on, the link to Family Tree will appear next to the FamilySearch logo like this:

If you click on this link, you will enter the program. This is what it looks like to me:
I have blanked out some information showing living people. Now you are ready to start working. You may see something different, especially if you have never previously contributed information to New.FamilySearch.org or any of the other programs that made up the data in Family Tree.

If you still have questions, Please send me your comments.

Greek coalition allies snub PM's appeal on austerity

ATHENS (Reuters) - The Greek prime minister's appeal for a united front to push through more austerity fell on deaf ears on Tuesday, with one ally promising to vote against reforms and another scolding him for prematurely saying talks had ended.

A flurry of contradictory statements from the three parties in Greece's ruling coalition highlighted the chaos ahead of a crucial vote on austerity measures, which is turning into the government's biggest test since taking power in June.

Near-bankrupt Greece needs to push through spending cuts and tax measures worth 13.5 billion euros as well as a raft of reforms to appease EU and IMF lenders and secure bailout money needed to avoid running out of cash next month.

But a deal has been held up by the small Democratic Left party's refusal to back labor reforms, which has tempted other lawmakers to defect and leaves the government facing an unpredictable vote in parliament next week.

After months of negotiations on the austerity plan, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras announced on Tuesday that talks had been completed and implored his allies to back the package.

"What would happen if the deal isn't passed and the country is led to chaos?" Samaras said in a statement.

"Such dangers must be avoided. That is the responsibility of each party and every lawmaker individually."

The Democratic Left party immediately responded by reiterating it would vote against labor reforms.

"The Democratic Left has fought on the issue of labor relations, to protect workers' rights which have been already weakened," the party said in statement.

"It does not agree with the result of the negotiations. The Democratic Left sticks to its position."

The other junior partner in Samaras's coalition, the Socialist PASOK, then interrupted a party meeting to put out a statement chiding Samaras for saying talks had concluded.

"A rushed press release that says 'the government did what it could, it is moving ahead and whoever wants to should follow it' ... is at best unfortunate," the party's chief said in the statement.

NUMBERS GAME

The once-mighty Socialists, who have seen their support evaporate in the face of continued austerity, have also criticized the labor reforms but have not explicitly said how they will vote. The party has hinted it will vote in favor, to preserve political stability.

The government is expected to include a large chunk of the austerity measures in the 2013 budget bill to be presented on Wednesday, with the remaining measures and labor reforms in a separate bill to be put to parliament on Monday.

The bickering among the allies threatens to bring next week's vote down to a numbers game, undermining Samaras's pledge that Greece's government is committed to doing everything it can to restore credibility in the eyes of European partners.

The Democratic Left party has the support of 16 deputies in the 300-seat parliament, meaning the government - which has a 176-seat majority - could pass the reforms without its support as long as PASOK deputies vote in favor.

But the smaller party's stance has emboldened some in PASOK and speculation has grown that some rebel lawmakers could vote against the measures. The austerity bill could be defeated if more than 10 of the 33 PASOK lawmakers oppose them.

The government also faces a contentious vote on a privatizations bill on Wednesday which could set the tone for the bigger vote next week.

The proposed law intends to scrap the government's obligation to own a minimum stake in a string of former state companies, but PASOK and Democratic Left deputies have demanded all privatizations be subject to parliamentary approval.

A Democratic Left official said the party would abstain on the entire privatization bill and vote against certain articles.

Euro zone finance ministers are due to hold a conference call on Greece on Wednesday, ahead of a November 12 meeting that is expected to focus on the debt-laden nation's latest crisis.

Subaru Palm Challenge 2012 ? Down to one Malaysian

Greetings from Singapore! The sun finally took a break after two days of full force shine, making way for the first drops of rain from the sky since the Subaru Challenge 2012 ? The Asian Face-Off started on 1pm last Saturday. Most, if not all, of the ?burned out? contestants rejoiced at the downpour, but for many who dropped out due to heat exhaustion, the repreive came too late.

This annual show of human willpower never ceases to amaze me ? these hardy men and women have been in the same position for over 60 hours as I type now, with only a five-minute break every six hours to do all necessary business like eat, drink, smoke, massage and toilet.

It was nice to see colleagues and friends lending their moral support during their office lunch break. Like the reassuring presence of a family member, the encouragement is extra fuel for the weary mind.

Many have wilted and as of now, only 30 out of the original 400 are still in the running to drive away a new Subaru XV, which is launching in Malaysia as a CKD assembled car soon.

I witnessed both the 1pm and 7pm break sessions at Ngee Ann City?s Civic Plaza along Orchard Road today, and upon arrival, I was greeted with the news that Chan Hon Ki has dropped out of the contest. He had bad foot swelling, leaving Tan Hong Sheng and Tan Chuan Kok as the only two Malaysians in contention.

Chuan Kok, the older Tan, looked relatively strong and focused, and showed the same defiance during the evening break, which is why I?m very surprised to now hear that he?s out. Chuan Kok, or Scott, has joined the Subaru Palm Challenge two times prior to this year?s edition, and his previous record was 53 hours and 55 minutes.

I?m not sure if he had managed to beat that time, which he told me is his ultimate goal, but we?ll find out tomorrow, along with the reason he?s out. ?I have to do it, no matter how,? the 37-year old RHB system support employee said earlier.

His departure leaves the bespectacled Tan Hong Sheng (pic above) as the sole Malaysian standing. This means that he will pocket S$1,000 as the ?Country Winner?, and could be the regional contestant to walk away with S$5,000 as the ?Asian Winner?. It won?t be easy, as he has to contend with the Vietnamese.

No contest for the ?Country Team Winner? (S$10,000 prize) since Vietnam still has five men standing as of now ? besides Philippines with two, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia are all down to one.

Last year, Singaporean Chong Kiat Chi drove home a Subaru Impreza WRX after 75 hours and 36 minutes in the sun and rain. Will anyone better that this year? Last year?s runner-up Tilani Haresh Lachmandas is looking good to complete the job this time around.

Painful scenes from the two breaks are after the jump.

Did You Know?

The U.S. Senate declared October National Work & Family Month with the National Work-Life Initiative that ?supporting a balance between work and personal life is in the best interest of national worker productivity?, and that ?reducing the conflict between work and family life should be a national priority?.

Dedicating a month to work and family issues encourages all workplaces to pause once a year and reflect on the progress already made on the journey to work-life effectiveness, celebrate and then raise the bar, and moving on to even more pervasive progress.
Did you know that??

  • 85% of U.S. wage and salaried workers have immediate, day-to-day family responsibilities off the job.
  • 46% of wage and salaried workers are parents with children under the age of 18 who live with them at least half time.
  • Nearly one out of every four Americans ? over 45 million Americans ? provided or arranged care for a family member or friend in the past year.
  • An increasing number of baby boomers reach retirement age in record numbers [and] more and more Americans are faced with the challenge of caring for older parents.

Work, life, and family balance are extremely important; dedicate this month to celebrating progress and setting the bar one notch higher for the next upcoming year!

This week, EDWS is hosting a ?Fall Festival?, co-sponsored by Department of Recreational Services, Athletics/Basketball Team, and GSU Art Education students from the National Art Education Association. In observance of National Work and Family Month in October, we are planning this celebration for the GSU community and family members, including ?kids of all ages? on Wednesday, October 31st, 11:30AM ? 1:30PM.

Come join us for your health!

Hurricane Sandy And NASDAQ Closure Interferes With Post-IPO Facebook Stock Lockup

facebookAnother unfortunate effect of Hurricane Sandy?Facebook employees and shareholders whose lockup expired today may have to wait a few more days before selling shares. Today, lockups expired on 234 million shares, allowing these shareholders to trade their stock on the public markets. Except, the public markets are closed today, due to the onslaught of Hurricane Sandy in the New York area.

Sandy strengthens as nears coast; Wall Street shut

NEW YORK/REHOBOTH BEACH, Delaware (Reuters) - Hurricane Sandy began battering the U.S. East Coast on Monday with fierce winds and driving rain, as the monster storm shut down transportation, shuttered businesses and sent thousands scrambling for higher ground hours before the worst was due to strike.

About 50 million people from the Mid-Atlantic to Canada were in the path of the nearly 1,000-mile-wide (1,600-km-wide) storm, which forecasters said could be the largest to hit the mainland in U.S. history. It was expected to topple trees, damage buildings, cause power outages and trigger heavy flooding.

State governors warned of the acute danger from the winds and torrential rains. "There will undoubtedly be some deaths that are caused by the intensity of this storm, by the floods, by the tidal surge, by the waves. The more responsibly citizens act, the fewer people will die," Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley told reporters.

The U.S. stock market suffered its first weather-related closure in 27 years and many schools and businesses were closed in Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York.

While the center of the storm was not expected to make landfall until Monday night near Atlantic City, New Jersey, it was already creating dangerous conditions and forcing rescue workers into action.

Off North Carolina, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued 14 of the 16 crew members who abandoned the replica tall ship HMS Bounty, using helicopters to lift them from life rafts. The Coast Guard continued to search for the two missing crew members about 160 miles from the eye of the storm.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the Category 1 storm had strengthened as it turned toward the coast and was moving at 18 miles per hour (30 km per hour). It was expected to bring a "life-threatening storm surge," coastal hurricane winds and heavy snow in the Appalachian Mountains, the NHC said.

Forecasters said Sandy was a rare, hybrid "super storm" created by an Arctic jet stream wrapping itself around a tropical storm.

Nine U.S. states have declared a state of emergency.

With the election eight days away, President Barack Obama canceled a campaign event in Florida on Monday in order to return to Washington and monitor the U.S. government's response to the storm.

"This is a serious and big storm," Obama said on Sunday after a briefing at the federal government's storm response center in Washington. "We don't yet know where it's going to hit, where we're going to see the biggest impacts.

Sandy killed 66 people in the Caribbean last week before pounding U.S. coastal areas as it moved north.

While Sandy does not pack the punch of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans in 2005, it could become more potent as it approaches the U.S. coast.

Winds were at a maximum of 90 mph, the NHC said in its 11 a.m. (1500 GMT) report, up from 75 mph nine hours earlier. It said tropical storm-force winds reached as far as 485 miles from the center.

Several feet of water flooded streets in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, which could be right in the target zone of the storm.

Local residents said police knocked on doors on Sunday, reminding everyone there was a mandatory evacuation. While the police took names, they allowed residents to stay at their own risk.

"If power goes that's a problem," said John Brunhammer, 40, a recruiter from Lewes, Delaware, who had come to see the waves crashing up to the dune line at Rehoboth Beach. "This area isn't known for prompt utility service."

New York and other cities and towns closed their transit systems and ordered mass evacuations from low-lying areas ahead of a storm surge that could reach as high as 11 feet.

By early Monday, water was already topping the seawall in Manhattan's Battery Park City, one of the areas evacuated by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

All U.S. stock markets will be closed on Monday and possibly Tuesday, the operator of the New York Stock Exchange said late on Sunday, reversing an earlier plan that would have kept electronic trading going on Monday.

The United Nations, Broadway theaters and New Jersey casinos were forced to close, and more than two-thirds of the East Coast's oil refining capacity was in the process of shutting down.

THE SUPER STORM

Officials ordered people in coastal towns and low-lying areas to evacuate, often telling them they would put emergency workers' lives at risk if they stayed.

At 11 a.m. (1500 GMT), the NHC said Sandy was centered about 205 miles southeast of Atlantic City and about 260 miles south-southeast of New York City.

The minimum central pressure - a key measure of a cyclone's strength - was recorded at 946 millibar overnight, matching the lowest pressure ever measured in the United States north of Cape Hatteras. The only previous time such a low measurement was recorded was in 1938, when the "Long Island Express" ripped up the coast, meteorologists said.

The storms could cause up to 12 inches of rain in some areas, as well as up to 3 feet (1 meter) of snowfall in the Appalachian Mountains from West Virginia to Kentucky.

Worried residents in the hurricane's path packed stores, searching for generators, flashlights, batteries, food and other supplies in anticipation of power outages. Nearly 284,000 residential properties valued at $88 billion are at risk for damage, risk analysts at CoreLogic said.

Transportation systems shut down in anticipation. Airlines canceled flights, bridges and tunnels closed, and national passenger rail operator Amtrak suspended nearly all service on the East Coast. The U.S. government told non-emergency workers in Washington, D.C., to stay home.

Utilities from the Carolinas to Maine reported late Sunday that a combined 14,000 customers were already without power.

The second-largest oil refinery on the East Coast, Phillips 66's 238,000 barrel per day (bpd) Bayway plant in Linden, New Jersey, was shutting down and three other plants cut output as the storm affected operations at two-thirds of the region's plants.

Oil prices slipped on Monday, with Brent near $109 a barrel.

While Sandy's 90 mph winds were not overwhelming for a hurricane, its exceptional size means the winds will last as long as two days.

"This is not a typical storm," Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett said. "It could very well be historic in nature and in scope."

BE PREPARED

1. It is essential to register your attendance in advance so that the coordinator knows how many to expect and ensure a successful workshop for all.

2. Members and Non-Members can attend the Workshop.

3. Songwriters presenting a song for critique/pitch must:

a. Bring at least 30 typed copies of your lyric sheet (with full contact details)

b. bring your song on CD or perform live (bring your instrument ? unplugged/no P.A). All CD?s must be burned to work on a CD Player. Please check the CD first ? if it won?t play in your car CD then it won?t work at the workshop.

c. have CD labeled with track number / and instruments tuned and ready.

4.How Song critiques are chosen: Song Critiques are randomly chosen from those who arrive and are fully signed in before 11:35am (not whoever arrives first). We try and start sign in at 11:30am (depends on our set up needs). This does not guarantee we will get to all songs within workshop (depends on numbers). Any arrivals post 11:35am will be on a wait list and if we have the time will try to fit those in. Anyone who arrives post 11:45pm will not be eligible to receive a song critique, even wait listed. Workshop starts on time, 11:30am.

5. Do I have to get a song critique? No. You don?t need to present a song for critique to benefit from our workshop. Watch, listen, participate and meet fellow peers. It?s all part of learning.

6. We do not support late arrivals. Please be on time to be fair to our participants and guests and stay from beginning to end.

MORE ABOUT THE SONGSALIVE! WORKSHOPS

Our guest speakers represent all facets of the industry from A&R, publishers, successful producers, CD production and distribution execs and, of course, writers and composer who share their ideas, tips & techniques on all aspects of the songwriting craft.

Some topics include song structure, song production, lyric writing, finding inspiration, songs and the media, promoting your music online, how to tour, how to get songs in film and television, performing at your best.

Our workshops are designed for songwriters and composers (from budding to professional) who have written songs, or are in the songwriting stage, who want to further their craft, gain feedback on their music, and potentially get their songs out to the world. However, we also have singers, musicians, and non music types who attend as it?s a great networking opportunity (singers looking for songwriters, or musicians looking for songs, as examples).

The goals of the workshop are about 1) the SONG and making it the best it can be 2) providing a community for our members to gather, network, collaborate and learn.

How to supplement your child's education ? My Blog

Even if our children attend best private or public school, their?education?is greatly affected by how we as parents approach it. ?Even if we help them with their homework assignment, school projects, sometimes that is not enough. ?What happens during holiday breaks, vacations, our kids seem to forget a great deal of what they have learned. ?What if you simply just like to add?additional?work to help them understand concepts, or you just like to add a program which your school is lacking.

For school breaks, summer vacations, and even weekends, our children have additional school work. ?Just 10?minutes a day spending on few extra math or word problem will greatly help your child. ?We also try to take the science concepts out of their textbooks and have hands on learning experience at home. ?With a positive attitude and approach your children will look?forward?to the extra work.

I have put together some of our favorite?resources?which have worked for us for many years.

1. Everything you never learned about birds by Rebecca Rupp ~ great?addition?to ?your child?s library.

2. 240 Vocabulary words 3rd grade kids need to know by Linda Ward Beech ~ There are additional workbooks for other grades by her.

3. The lego idea book by Daniel Lipcowitz ~ Great user friendly and inspirational guide for any building ability.

4. Weather by Rebecca Rupp ~ This is our most used weather reference book!

5. Emily Post?s The Gift of Good Manners by Peggy Post and Cindy Post Senning ~ When it ?comes to?etiquette?and good manners, this is something that is greatly lacking in our society?now days. ?This great?resource?book covers children from toddlers to teens.

6. Keeping a Nature Journal by Clare Walker Leslie and Charles E.Roth ~ This is our most used reference guide for nature journal keeping.

7. ScienceWiz Chemistry Kit ~ This is one of our favorites. ?Science kits offer?hands on?science learning at home.

8. Decimals & Fractions by Kumon ~ Kumon workbooks for math are our favorite. ?There are additional workbooks for other grade levels.

9.?Cheese?making kit ~ Another great product that can help your children visualize biology and chemistry, and the best part is that you can eat it too!

10. Antworks antfarm by fascinations ~ The Antworks antfarm is by far the best antfarm available! ?Our whole family enjoys watching ants tunneling. ?You can also paired this up with Keeping Nature Journal, and have your children record, doodle, their observations!

11. The Complete Home Learning Source Book by Rebecca Rupp ~ This is our most used?resource?book covering all subjects and grades.

12. ?The butterfly garden by Insect Lore ~ In spring and summer we hatch and raise?butterflies. ?This is also something that you can pair up with Keeping Nature Journal and record observations. ?Great hands on science learning activity for the whole family!

Hope you have found our home education guide useful, and feel free to share your favorite?supplemental?education?resources?for kids!

RolePlayGateway is a site built by a couple roleplayers who wanted to give a little something back to the roleplay community. The site has no intention of earning any profit, and is paid for out of their own pockets.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
